Computers are getting smaller and smaller by the day! I remember carrying around a large gigantic laptop with me a few years ago. Nowadays, laptops are becoming the size of notebooks, some even slimmer. I, myself, bring a MSI Wind around with me for presentations. Additionally, I use it for light-work such as web browsing, video playback and document usage.
Another company joins the “tiny” pc market with their Fit-PC2 which packs in an Intel Atom Z530 1.6GHZ (not the latest in Atom technology), 1GB of memory (hopefully it’s expandable to 2GB), a typical 2.5” hard disk (160GB on most models), WLan 802.11b/g and internal INTEL graphics chip (GMA500). Consumers will have the option to either purchase a Windows or Linux box. All of this fits inside a small box at a light weight of 370 grams!
I am not quite sure if the pc will be able to run high definition movies smoothly, however, a typical netbook with the same specifications can barely cope with the video decoding. Nonetheless, the pc seems to have successfully been installed with Windows 7.
CompuLab, an Israeli computer manufacturer behind the new Fit-PC2, will be accepting orders this month (May 2009). Prices range from US $245 to US $396. The Fit-PC2 XP will be the top of the line model at $396 which is roughly the same price as a MSI Wind. A good deal, perhaps! Check out the different models here.
There’s a picture on the company website showing the “300” HD 1080p movie playing alongside the task manager which happens to be only taking 30% of CPU. I can’t vouch on the smoothness as it is only a still image. This might be a little bit misleading as a higher end Intel Atom processor and graphics card can’t even handle a smooth 720p playback. However, if I’ll be able to get a unit to test, I’ll be glad to dissect this “tiny” beast and see if full HD movies can really be handled by the machine
It’s actually so small that it can be attached to the back of a LCD monitor. Just check out the comparison between a car key and the “tiny” Fit-PC2. It’s petite! You can easily pop this inside a shoulder bag!
